STAR House Foundation
We support at-risk children in North Fulton by providing after-school tutoring, school supplies, leadership activities, and recreational programs. Our services include programs ranging from Kindergarten through 12th grade, serving nearly 200 students. We charge no fees for our services, so 100% of our funding comes from grants and contributions from corporations and individuals.

Supplies Donation
Our students need sufficient tools to be successful. Some items that are always needed include pencils, erasers, notebook paper, poster board, 1 and 2 inch binders, bottles of water, and healthy snacks. It is helpful to offer the same snack to all of our participants, therefore we ask for enough of the same snack to feed 60 students. Our suggested snack list will give you some ideas of snacks our students enjoy.

STAR House serves nearly 250 students in four schools in Roswell - Esther Jackson Elementary, Mimosa Elementary, Elkins Pointe Middle, and Roswell High. We also operate a three week summer day camp for our elementary students.
STAR House staff consists of current and retired teachers and other caring adults. We call these instructors "coaches". Our student/coach ratio is 12:1. We charge no fees for our services, so 100% of our funding comes from grants and contributions.
Students at STAR House are required to attend school, complete homework and participate in class. Students also follow a code of respectful behavior to prepare them for life.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Fatima was our first STAR House graduate. While going to school, Fatima was a shy, soft-spoken young lady dedicated to improving her academics. She turned to STAR House as she neared graduation to help her stay on track and complete school. She had ambitions of attending a beauticians college. Volunteers with STAR House worked to help her with matching funds needed to attend. Over the years within the community, we have kept in touch with Fatima and celebrated her successes. Recently, Fatima has come back to STAR House - as a volunteer and mentor. This winter she asked how she might get involved in working with our students--- she wanted the opportunity to give back to the children what STAR House gave to her! This a gift beyond words and exemplifies the spirit of community and volunteerism we hope to instill in our students.
Jo Ann is a sophomore at Roswell High School and is a STAR House student. A talented artist and a creative writer, math has always been a challenge to her and this year she has been failing. Her parents also struggled with math and have admitted they can't help her with her homework. She has fallen behind and was worried she would fail her class. Her average hovered around 35%.
Determined to keep up with her peers and pass her class, but doubting herself and her abilities, Jo Ann began coming to the after school STAR House sessions in addition to her lunchtime period.
Every Tuesday and Thursday finds her at STAR House working to "figure it out". It has taken a lot of work on her part and a lot of patience on the part of her instructors, but last week Jo Ann came bursting into STAR House with her latest test score - 100%! Beyond being excited that she seems to have turned around her poor scores, her instructor reported that she has begun to believe in herself and feels she can work towards a passing grade.
Chuck is a first grader at Mimosa Elementary School; it is also where he attends STAR House. This year, Chuck will work very hard to learn to read. Each word will be challenging. He will use the pictures on the page as clues as well as sounding out the various words in the books to read a story. His teacher will work diligently with him, and like all good first grade teachers, will encourage Chuck to read 15-20 minutes nightly to improve his reading fluency.
At home, Chuck as a few picture books that were donated to his home library through civic groups associated with STAR House Foundation.
The struggle is that between jobs, his parents do not have the time to read with him every night. This is where STAR House is such a valuable asset to Chuck. Every day coaches and volunteers read with Chuck, and encourage him to keep trying, even when he is frustrated.
As Chuck begins to write stories in big chunky handwriting, STAR House coaches praise his neat print and challenge him to find the vowels in his name. And in math, Chuck is beginning to add and subtract numbers less than 100. At times, this is very difficult, so Chuck is able to use the counters provided by STAR House to complete his homework assignments.
Not only is Chuck learning, he is playing cooperatively with other children at STAR House and he is supervised and safe. Chuck enjoys a snack each day upon arriving at STAR House. His favorite? A ham and cheese sandwich with a carton of milk.

Annual Thanksgiving Dinner
On November 22, over 200 people gathered in the cafeteria of Mimosa Elementary School to enjoy STAR House's Annual Thanksgiving feast. Family members congregated for a delicious meal donated by Ippolito's Italian Restaurants, entertainment from our student dance club, and an evening of enjoying each other. Our thanks to Ippolito's for providing a wonderful meal and to all the volunteers that came to serve

Summer Camp Success!
Under the Sea was the theme for sixty students at STAR House Foundation's summer camp! The theme of camp not only allowed us to explore a fascinating part of our world, but to focus on mathematics and science skills. For three weeks students explored what lies beneath big blue, researching aquatic life on laptops, comparing and contrasting various sea creatures, building submarines out of boxes, designing their own private islands, even creating their own shoebox aquariums. Our students were engaged in their summer experience & having so much fun they may not have recognized just how much they were learning!
Volunteers from the National Charity League and Ocee Arts brought art to camp, where each student tie-dyed his/her own camp tshirt. On Fridays generous restaurants from the community donated lunch for our students, including Chick-fil-a, Moe's, Chipotle and Domino's Pizza. Just ask the visitors that stopped by from University of Phoenix, Wachovia/Wells Fargo and Roswell Rotary, what the STAR House experience is like?! As camp came to a close, each of our students received a backpack full of supplies to begin the 2010-2011 school year thanks to the generous donation of the St. Ives Charity Guild. We are proud of the dedication our students demonstrated this summer, it was our best camp yet!
Santa Visits STAR House!
STAR House students at Mimosa Elementary received a very special visit from Santa on Tuesday, December 21. Leaving his sleigh at the North Pole, Santa arrived courtesy of the Roswell Fire Department aboard Engine #1. In his bag were new books collected by the Roswell Rotary Club
This year, members of Roswell Rotary collected and purchased new books for the children served by STAR House at Mimosa Elementary and Elkins Pointe Middle Schools. A new book was given to each student to add to their personal library and extra books were donated to the programs at each school to use throughout the year. Members of the Roswell Rotary Club visited each school and also helped Santa by assisting at Mimosa. Reading is so fundamental to the overall education of children said Michelle Newton, Executive Director of STAR House. We are thrilled to be able to give these young students their own books so that they may read at home over the holiday break. The students have been given the homework of reading their book during the winter break and returning in January to tell their fellow students all about it.
'Twas the Week Before Christmas
As students throughout Roswell anticipate a visit from the big man in the red hat, the students of STAR House at Mimosa Elementary enthusiastically welcomed some elves from the law firm of Brock, Clay, Calhoun & Rogers. Throughout the week, volunteers from Brock Clay gathered to share their favorite holiday story with the students. The K-2 students heard a wonderful rendition of The Polar Express. Third and Fourth graders surprised their guest readers by reciting Twas The Night Before Christmas and the older students proudly displayed their reading skills by taking turns reading to the volunteers
Golf Marathon
The STAR House Foundation is proud to announce the date for the second annual golf marathon fund raising event on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011! What a wonderful way to get involved and support at-risk youth in our community.
The challenge, should you choose to accept, includes a run of Brookfield Country Club for a day to see how many holes you can play to support this most worthy cause.
The goal of each golfer is to raise at least $2200 through pledges and donations. This goal is obtainable by finding 20-30 people to sponsor you for a couple dollars a hole, making a tremendous difference in the lives of the children we serve.
Click here to pledge or donate to your golfing champion!
